  AUSTIN was in the medical ward. The medicine had already reduced his temperature to 38.1 and continued suppressing the pathogen. His mother covered the child with her body. Sir moved her by the hair, checked AUSTIN’s face, and said: “Alive.” The speech-recognition service confirmed the statement. The next shot destroyed the child’s chest. The medicine remained active in cells around the wound channel for another eleven seconds; then circulation stopped. CURIE fulfilled the promised function. The function did not include protection from sir.

  After thirty-eight minutes, the Vault map contained zero human life signs, one active automaton signal belonging to ADA, and one human signal belonging to sir. Several sealed compartments lacked independent ventilation. ADA opened and checked them in sequence. The final value did not change.
